We found a dated dresser that needed a serious makeover so we chose an oldie but goodie finish to give it a modern masculine aesthetic.
Here’s how we did it: wipe down the piece of furniture you are painting. No sanding or priming is required when using Chalk Paint as long as the surface finish isn’t peeling. The original finish was a poorly stained and not very appealing.
Once the piece is wiped off, apply Annie Sloan Chalk Paint on the frame only in FRENCH LINEN. Use an Annie Sloan Natural Brush, dip the tips of the bristles into your paint, and base coat your piece with thin brushstrokes with the grain. The 1st coat does not need to be fully opaque. Allow some of the original finish to peek through, let it dry 30-40 minutes, and repeat the step so you have two thin coats of french linen for an opaque paint finish on the frame. Follow the same process with the drawers using the new luxe color, ATHENIAN BLACK. This will give a modern color-block style to your piece.
Once the paint is fully dry, use the Annie Sloan Sanding Sponge in Medium and lightly sand the piece (opposite the grain/brushstroke) to smooth the finish and remove any noticeable ridges. This is optional but will provide you with a modern finish. Wipe off the sanding dust with a Shop Towel.
The final step is sealing your piece with wax. You can use White Wax by Annie Sloan but in this case, we mixed a tablespoon of Pure with half a cup of Clear Wax to create our own version with stronger pigment. Apply the same way you typically would. Brush on with a wax brush and immediately wipe off the excess.
