We just finished a lovely dining room project and had to share the photos and instructions in hopes to inspire others to recreate this quick and easy update.
We were referred to this client from her designer who had already suggested she paint her dining room furniture to update the look. Based on the new fabric they selected for the chair reupholstery, we suggested they paint the table apron and legs Pure White and the sideboard/buffet in Antibes Green with a White Wax patina. The results? A Hamptons-style dining room with a fresh, transitional feel. Here’s how we finished the sideboard:
Wipe down the piece of furniture you are painting. No sanding or priming is required when using Chalk Paint as long as the surface finish isn’t peeling – so decant your Antibes Green (a fresh, modern green hue) pick up your Annie Sloan paint brush (we used the Medium) and start painting with the grain. Allow the first coat to dry for 30 minutes then coat again, lightly, with the grain for full coverage. In this case, we left the top wood so we avoided painting it. We also had some details that required “stippling” the paint (a stabbing motion) deep into the carvings as we painted.
Once the sideboard is dry, use a medium sanding sponge to distress the edges of the Antibes Green paint and also to lightly sand the finish off the wood top so it will accept White Wax. Wipe the sanding dust off.
Seal your paint and wood with White Wax by Annie Sloan. This will “age” it in a light way (versus a dark aging) and give it what we call a “Hamptons” feel on a bright color like this. To use the White Wax, swirl the tip of your Wax Brush in the Wax tin, loading about a half tablespoon onto the brush, then sweep it on the surface of your furniture, a small section at a time. Allow it to sit for about 1 minute, then wipe off the excess with a lint-free cloth (we use Shop Towels.) Here’s a time-lapse video of how we did this step. We love the look of White Wax on her dark wood top and over the bright Antibes to really make it a bit more subtle and interesting.
